October Muses: Success for the Big 10 Alliance

October 2, 2010

Ten for Ten in 2010

These last few days I have been musing over the experience of the last 5 months.  Always in the foremost of my mind is a strategy to create win win situations. Getting all the pieces to fit requires evaluating what works and what doesn’t. The one thing interesting to me is that generally I’m able to come up with a plan and move forward in the direction of realizing the goal. In the past when I took this approach there were not so many people involved in the outcome.

The intention of the Studio Earth Initiative now is to engage the community in the process of this creative social enterprise. Everyone’s efforts in helping to achieve the goal are necessary. I’m not alone anymore. I am teamed with a number of local nonprofits to assist them with a source of funding that is sustainable and consistent. I am also teamed with a group of dedicated partners in the Big 10 Alliance that gives us the collective strength we need to win these grants – allowing us to carry out our plans of having a positive impact on our communities. True grassroots efforts are the hands spinning this wheel of fortune; fortunes of opportunities in a challenged world where you the voters are being given a chance to support the altruistic visions of some really great causes. All you have to do is vote!

That is my musing. Somehow, the Pepsi prize, the $50K grant that we have been competing for has slipped from our grasp yet one more time, and I hope for the last time. While there are so many elements to this contest for funding that seem unfair, the one redeemer that keeps Studio 33 participating is the collective effort of others all doing great things to enrich communities all across America. It makes sense to me that I have found a place amongst this group The Big 10 Alliance – and this month it will be 10 for 10, or even better yet, all of our group including our soft partners. It will be a win for us all because everyone took a little bit of time each day to vote.

Everyone is being asked to make a contribution of time to support our Alliance. Voting for all ten partners is like casting 10 votes for Studio 33. We could not be in a winning position without them. Our request is simply a few moments out of your day, every day, to vote. Now while that seems like a lot to ask in a very busy world, consider for a moment the widespread impact this will have on many communities across America.

  • Studio 33 will make a $50K grant replenish itself, year after year.  Text vote 100505 to Pepsi @ 73774
  • Skip Program, our long time partner in Pepsi will enable every child in their community access to their dream of playing sports.  Text vote 100847 to 73774
  • Casting for Recovery  will provide hope and healing retreats for women breast cancer survivors.  Text vote 101715 to 73774
  • Associates of Redlands Bowl will bring free quality performing arts to the community.  Text vote 102320 to 73774
  • Buss Fitness will open a free community health and wellness facility.  Text vote 100585 to 73774
  • TwHistory for Social media, will create virtual reenactments via Twitter.  Text vote  102066 to 73774
  • Lynn Munter for Avalon will develop programming and curriculum for a free multi-arts school.  Text vote 102340 to 73774
  • Tilden will construct a safe, modern city playground in rural Tilden, Nebraska.  Text vote 100507 to 73774
  • Tualatin Elementary will run an after school arts program at Tualatin Elementary in Oregon.  Text vote 100321 to 73774
  • St Joseph School will provide teachers with computers which will benefit their students.  Text vote 100242 to 73774

And our soft allies supporting our causes:

  • Strong women organizing outrageous projects (SWOOP) will build wheelchair ramps for people in need. This is an organization that has done so many other incredible things over the last 14 years!  Text vote 102191 to 73774
  • Healthy Habits Nutrition empowering healthier choices: text 100214 to 73774
  • Mokena School District bringing back extracurricular programs in Mokena, Il. Text 100518 to 73774
  • The Gateway Playhouse creating access for patrons with disabilities.  Text 102255 to 73774
  • Read To Me providing books to low-income newborn babies in hospitals.  Text 102348 to 73774
  • RAINN expanding live online help for victims of sexual violence. Text 102552 to 73774
  • Unity Project: Launch 1,000 youth service projects in America
  • 87 Plays: Help save the youth sports programs in Las Vegas
  • POP!: Open POP! Performing Arts Outreach Camp for underserved kids
  • World Virtual School:  Create World Virtual School to provide free courses to global students

Friends, this is by far the easiest no-cost way to help shape communities across America. Only a number of mouse clicks away, your  10 votes cast daily all 3 ways possible will help us make the difference you want to see in the world. But we need your commitment to voting daily and sharing this with others to encourage support to make it happen. Please remember to vote on weekends too!  If you need a reminder please send us an email and we will put you on our list of people to remind.  Send email to

August Updates for Studio 33

August 5, 2010

We are in the heat of the summer and there is much going on for Studio 33. Many of you reading this post are supporting our efforts to secure the Pepsi Refresh grant of $50K to help many non-profits in our community. This has been a roller coaster ride, (a very long one) and we are still in the coaster car. On a personal note, I am in the throws of relocating the studio to help facilitate this project so therefore have very limited time this month for networking. This is where Studio 33 depends on the strength and support of the community and the nonprofits to engage and support this collective effort to enrich our community.

For those unaware of the glitches in Pepsi’s website, be aware now. The first few days of every month are unusual and the rankings are never stable until the 4th or 5th day. However, it is important for people to keep voting regardless. Studio 33 needs  the community to continue to vote daily if you are in support of our project to assist non-profits with creative funding. We cannot do this without your help. It appears that we are currently #21. We need to get into the top ten position over the coarse of the next week which means we need everyone voting daily and helping to spread the word.

After 3 plus months of rallying local support and forming strategic Pepsi project partnerships, we have learned much. The important piece of information is how many votes are needed and where are they coming from. Our project partners, referred to as our “Alliance” generate the majority of the votes that we need to get close to our goal. If we could increase the number of votes generated in our community by two or three thousand, I think we could surely win this. Each month that number increases, so we should work on making a win happen this month.

Regarding the  move to a new location – this week. The new location was chosen to allow us to carry out our plan to produce the product line of the Studio Earth Signature Series. It has been the plan all along, one that has been delayed because of the time and energy spent on Pepsi Refresh. We never thought that it would take three months, now four months, or perhaps longer. Being so close and at one point in the lead for this money keeps us in the race. This is a grant that will benefit many.

Studio Thirty Three is extremely grateful for the unwavering support that many of you have given to this cause. We have seen many of you vote and promote and dedicate time and energy to increase our local support. We have gotten great coverage from our local newspaper, The Mountaineer, who has been instrumental in telling the story of our social enterprise and how it supports our local community. To sum this up:

  • Studio 33 is moving to a new location that will allow us to work more effectively on this and other projects.
  • We need everyone to keep voting daily to help secure this grant that will provide funding for Studio Earth and many local non-profits. See earlier posts about this.
  • There are 3 ways you can vote and all votes will count, updated on our earlier “How to Vote” Post.
  • Scroll just below to see Text Message Voting, Facebook profile and multi-project links.
  • Studio 33 needs a total increase of votes from the community in amounts of two to three thousand daily.
  • All non-profits that benefit from the shared proceeds can adopt similar promotional strategies and campaigns as Studio 33 did to acquire a dedicated pool of voters to help win this grant.
  • Win-win-win strategies succeed when everyone does a share of what needs to be done to achieve the goal.

Thank you all for your continued support. Please feel free to contact Studio 33 if you have any concerns or questions, but please also understand our limitation right now because of our move this month.

NC Projects for Pepsi Grants – VOTE Local

June 15, 2010

I write this post with half of June gone now, but still alive is my desire to create a North Carolina coalition of projects all involved in the Pepsi Refresh Campaign to change America. The corporate giant, Pepsi, is giving away 20 million dollars this year to fund projects all across America, and 32 monthly awards (1.3 million dollars) will be given based on public on line votes.

In this post we are suggesting  a coalition that supports a  campaign of Voting Early, Voting Daily and Voting Local, for North Carolina projects that will serve to impact many different things in our state. This list includes:

Wouldn’t it be nice to get all of these projects funded, enriching our state of North Carolina with such a broad scope of great ideas?

Studio Thirty Three (Studio33) has been on board with Pepsi Refresh since May. Chosen out of thousands of applicants in April submissions, the Studio Earth initiative is designed to assist many charities with a sustainable form of revenue annually. This unique and creative social enterprise has come at a time when many nonprofits are cutting back on staffed positions because of budget cuts, so much so that a plan such as this is critically useful. Additionally it has a potential for expansion to include a global picture. This is a true social enterprise, developed creatively with a unique triple bottom line.

Thirty percent of retail profits will go directly to fund many organizations. This is a substantial contribution to community. What this means as sustainable income for the organizations on board to receive is significant. This is why the organizations  are all behind this and supporting it and why all of the people in the community need to be supporting this grant program. Daily votes are needed until the goal is realized. We are so close at 27! So if you haven’t started voting yet, do it now.  The links to the projects listed are active and will take you directly to the Pepsi site to vote.

Some of the organizations that we are currently supporting or planning to support this year with each new piece include:

  • Haywood Animal Welfare Association (HAWA)
  • Haywood Community College Foundation:  The Bridge Scholarship Program
  • Haywood County Arts Council
  • Haywood Habitat for Humanity
  • Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Manna Food Bank  (serving Haywood County and the Open Door Community Kitchen)
  • National Association on Mental Illness  (NAMI)
  • Neighbor to Family
  • North Carolina Creative AutisticLIving and Learning, Inc. (NCCALL)
  • REACH of Haywood County

There are more to be announced that will include Aid to Veterans and Military Families, critical prenatal and neonatal care, early childhood education and many more as the project develops. Your vote for Studio 33 to receive this award from Pepsi is a vote for every organization we have named including those yet to come aboard.

Thank you for your interest and continued support. We welcome any questions and are open to having dialogue with anyone wanting to learn more – and better yet, anyone who wants to volunteer some time to help in our endeavors!

You can also find Studio 33 on Facebook. as well as a complete list of the many projects that we have teamed with and have shared support with. Please choose to use your votes on any of your favorites. After all, Pepsi is giving you ten votes!

Sincerely and in Service,
